WHO IS THE AUDIENCE FOR PHYSIQUE MAGAZINES? An individual may have many different reasons for reading physique magazines. One may be a bodybuilder, another may simply appreciate beautiful well-formed bodies, part of our aesthetic "instinct" which has been manifest since the days of the ancient Greeks.
IT TAKES ONE TO TELL ONE! We have read certain writers, some in high official positions, who have flatly stated that all physique books exist only for the "tittilation" of persons with homosexual tastes and interests. This form of inductive reasoning can be most misleading. To know so much about homosexual tastes, persons making such statements must themselves be homosexual and they assume that others reading the same books must share their reasons for doing so. Unfortunately many homosexuals (especially the repressed ones who wont admit it to themselves or anyone else) are especially intolerant and feel a necessity to punish others for what they may regard as an abberation in themselves. Perhaps the greatest gains for acceptance of homo-
sexuals has been made by basically heterosexual, liberal-minded groups (such as ACLU, Wolfendum committee, etc) and by some mature homophiles who have long since been inactive, or at least only a fraction so as those whose rights they defend.
In any case, there is only one individual who can state with true authority to whom a given magazine is directed and that is the editor/publisher. The editor of Physique Pictorial hereby states that this book is directed to everyone who appreciates wholesome, attractive physiques for whatever reason. We are not concerned with the color, gender, creed, politics, sex preferences or social philosophies of our audience-that is, we don't consider these to be any of our business. It is hoped that all who do contact the book (including the fault-finding censors) will be enriched in some way by their study of it.
As to what audience other physique books may be directed, we do not consider ourselves (or anyone else, save their editors) competent to sit in judgment.
MORE LETTERS FROM OUR READERS: CAN'T WAIT TEN YEARS! "I think you're cruel and heartless announcing films that you don't intend to release until the year 1976. Don't you know that many of your readers wont even be around at that time?" MG Greenboro, N.C. Editor's reply: "Maybe we wont be around either. If we were able we should like to make all of the films immediately available, but before a film can be offered certain intermediate prints and negatives must first be made. It is financially impractical to attempt to release more than one film each week. But the situation isn't entirely hopeless. If enough customers write in expressing an interest in a certain film, we'll release
it ahead of schedule. This has already happened in a number of instances. Pledges to buy from ten customers Justifies the advance release of a film..
CAN'T READ MODEL DIRECTORY "I purchased your $1 Model Directory and was most disappointed that much of the type is difficult to read. Will you print it over?" LV L.A. Editor's reply: Printer didn't follow instructions. Type could and should have been much larger. However, with a powerful magnifying glass you won't miss much. We do indeed hope to reprint the book in a more satisfactory manner but it can't be done very soon.
